Tawjihi Turkish University Admission: A Practical Guide

Tawjihi Turkish university admission is open to you, and the path is more straightforward than most families expect. If you hold a Tawjihi certificate from Jordan or Palestine, or a Thanawiya Amma certificate from Egypt, Sudan or another Arab country, you can apply to Turkish universities with it. The core of the process is three things: getting your diploma recognised through a denklik (the secondary school equivalence certificate), meeting the admission route each university sets, and submitting a complete, translated and notarised file on time. This guide walks through each step in plain terms.

Most applicants ask the same questions in the same order, so we have answered them here the way we answer them in our office. You do not need a Turkish qualification, and in many cases you do not need a separate entrance exam either.

Tawjihi and Thanawiya Amma Certificates Explained

The Tawjihi and the Thanawiya Amma are the official secondary school leaving certificates of several Arab countries, awarded at the end of the final year of high school. In Jordan and Palestine the certificate is called the Tawjihi, in Egypt and Sudan it is the Thanawiya Amma, and other countries use similar national examinations. Each one records your subject stream, usually scientific or literary, and a final percentage or grade. Turkish universities treat these as a recognised high school qualification, which is why Thanawiya Amma university admission and Tawjihi admission work through the same framework as any other international school diploma.

For a Turkish university, the certificate answers one question: have you completed secondary education to a standard equivalent to a Turkish high school. Once that is confirmed through equivalence, your grade becomes one of the figures an admissions office can read and compare.

Can You Use a Tawjihi for Tawjihi Turkish University Admission?

Yes, you can use a Tawjihi or Thanawiya Amma certificate directly for Tawjihi Turkish university admission, at both state and private universities. Turkey actively admits international students who finished secondary school abroad, and a national Arab school certificate is one of the most common qualifications our applicants arrive with. Private, or vakif, universities often admit on the strength of the certificate grade alone, sometimes combined with an English test for English-taught programmes. State universities more often ask for an entrance exam score as well, which we cover below.

What the certificate cannot do on its own is prove recognition. A grade on paper is not enough until Turkey formally accepts that your schooling is equivalent to its own, and that is the role of the denklik. Think of the certificate as your result and the equivalence as the permission to use it.

Do You Need a Denklik Equivalence Certificate?

Yes, almost every Turkish university requires a denklik, the diploma equivalence certificate that confirms your Tawjihi or Thanawiya Amma is equal to a Turkish high school diploma. For secondary school certificates this equivalence is issued by the Ministry of National Education, not by YOK (the Council of Higher Education), which handles university level recognition. You can read how the recognition system is framed on the Turkish Ministry of National Education website. Diploma equivalence for international students is the single most important document in the whole file, and the one most often missing when a case stalls.

You can obtain the equivalence in two ways. Before you travel, a Turkish embassy or consulate with an education attache in your country can process it. After you arrive in Turkey, a provincial directorate of national education can issue it. In our experience advising applicants, Tawjihi certificate equivalence is far smoother when the original certificate is already translated into Turkish or English and notarised before the appointment, so prepare those copies early.

How Do You Apply With a Tawjihi Certificate?

To apply with a Tawjihi certificate, you choose your universities and programmes, prepare your documents, submit each application within its own window, and then complete registration once an offer arrives. Knowing how to apply with a Tawjihi certificate in the right order saves weeks, because several steps overlap. The usual sequence looks like this:

  1. Shortlist universities and programmes, and note the admission route each one uses for school certificate holders.
  2. Start the denklik equivalence early, since it can take time and several universities will not finalise registration without it.
  3. Take an entrance exam, YOS or SAT, only if your target universities ask for one.
  4. Prepare and translate your documents, then have the translations notarised.
  5. Submit each application through the university's own online portal, one by one, before its deadline.
  6. Accept an offer, pay any registration fee, and complete enrolment, then move on to the student visa and residence permit.

Because each university runs its own portal and its own calendar, treat them as separate applications rather than one central system. A clear checklist of requirements for diploma equivalence for international students keeps the parallel deadlines from colliding.

Does the Tawjihi Stream Affect Your Programme Choice?

Your Tawjihi or Thanawiya Amma stream can affect which programmes you are eligible for, especially in science heavy fields. A scientific stream is usually expected for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and engineering, while a literary stream fits law, business, social sciences and the humanities. The equivalence certificate records your stream, so an admissions office can see at a glance whether your background matches the programme. If your stream and your target field do not line up, speak to an advisor before you apply, because a mismatch is a common reason a strong applicant is turned down for a specific department.

Grades matter differently by programme too. Competitive fields look closely at your overall percentage, so a student aiming at medicine should be realistic about how the certificate grade will be read against other applicants.

YOS or SAT: What Do Tawjihi Holders Need?

Many Tawjihi and Thanawiya Amma holders need either a YOS or a SAT score, but not all do, because entrance exam rules are set by each university rather than nationally. YOS, the Foreign Student Examination, is run by OSYM (the Student Selection and Placement Centre) and by individual universities, and it tests mathematics and abstract reasoning. SAT is accepted by many Turkish universities as an alternative. As of the time this article is written, some universities, particularly private ones, admit directly on the certificate grade with no exam at all. The table below sets out the typical picture.

RouteWhat it isWho usually needs it
Certificate onlyAdmission on your Tawjihi or Thanawiya Amma gradeMany private universities, some state programmes
YOSForeign Student Examination, maths and reasoningMany state universities and competitive programmes
SATInternational test accepted as a YOS alternativeUniversities that list SAT among accepted scores

To choose between the two exams, our guide to SAT vs YOS for Turkish university admission compares them in detail, and if your shortlist does not require either, the post on applying for Turkish universities without YOS shows what is still possible.

Documents Checklist for Tawjihi Turkish University Admission

A complete document set is what turns a Tawjihi Turkish university admission from a plan into an offer. Collecting everything before you open a single application portal is the habit that prevents last minute panic. Most universities ask for the following:

  • The original Tawjihi or Thanawiya Amma certificate, plus the detailed grade transcript.
  • The denklik equivalence certificate, or proof that the application for it is in progress.
  • A valid passport, with a clear scan of the photo page.
  • Passport sized photographs to the size the university specifies.
  • A language test result, such as an English test for an English-taught programme, where required.
  • A YOS or SAT score report, only if the university asks for one.
  • Official translations of each document, notarised where the university requires it.

For the wider picture of what any foreign applicant must provide, the overview of Turkish university admission requirements for foreigners is the companion piece to this one. If you plan to study in Turkish rather than English, you will usually need a certificate from a TOMER (a university Turkish language centre), so read about the TOMER certificate and why it matters for admission before you apply.

Common Mistakes That Delay a Tawjihi Application

The most common reason a Tawjihi or Thanawiya Amma application is delayed is a translation that was done but never notarised, so the file is technically incomplete. In our experience advising applicants, the second most common cause is leaving the equivalence certificate until the end, when it should be one of the first steps. A few other avoidable problems come up again and again, so it is worth naming them:

  • Applying to a programme that does not match your certificate stream.
  • Missing a single university's deadline because every portal runs its own calendar.
  • Submitting a scanned certificate that is unreadable or cropped.
  • Assuming one exam score is accepted everywhere without checking each university's list.

None of these are hard to avoid once you know they exist. Getting the diploma equivalence for international students right, along with clean, notarised translations, matters most, because almost everything else depends on them.

How Long Does the Process Take?

From a complete file, Tawjihi Turkish university admission can move quickly, often within a few weeks per university, but the Tawjihi certificate equivalence and the translations are what set the real pace. Universities open and close their application windows on their own schedules through the year, so the practical timeline depends more on when you start than on any single office. Starting the denklik and the document translations months ahead is the surest way to keep the whole process calm. For a sense of the calendar itself, our note on admission deadlines for Turkish universities in 2026 is a useful reference point.

Tawjihi Turkish university admission rewards early preparation more than anything else. If you have your certificate, your equivalence and your translations ready, you are most of the way there, and our advisors can handle the applications and the steps that follow. Thanawiya Amma university admission follows the same pattern, so the guidance here applies whichever certificate you hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Tawjihi certificate accepted by Turkish universities?

Yes, a Tawjihi certificate is accepted by Turkish universities as a recognised secondary school qualification. You will need a denklik equivalence certificate to confirm it is equal to a Turkish high school diploma, and some universities also ask for a YOS or SAT score depending on the programme.

What is the difference between Tawjihi and Thanawiya Amma for admission?

There is no practical difference for Turkish admission, because both are national secondary school leaving certificates treated through the same equivalence framework. The Tawjihi is used in Jordan and Palestine, the Thanawiya Amma in Egypt and Sudan, so once you learn how to apply with a Tawjihi certificate, the same approach covers both and Thanawiya Amma university admission follows the same steps.

Do I need to learn Turkish to apply with a Tawjihi?

No, you do not need Turkish if you choose an English-taught programme, though you may need to prove your English with a recognised test. If you choose a Turkish-taught programme, you will usually need a Turkish language certificate, and a TOMER course is the common route to it.

Can I apply to medicine with a literary stream Tawjihi?

It is difficult, because medicine, dentistry and engineering normally expect a scientific stream, which your equivalence certificate records. If your stream does not match a science programme, speak to an advisor about alternative programmes or routes before you submit an application.

When should I start the denklik equivalence?

Start the denklik as early as possible, ideally months before the application windows open, because it is the document most likely to slow a file down. You can begin it at a Turkish consulate with an education attache in your country, or at a provincial directorate of national education after you arrive in Turkey.
