Study in Turkey from Uzbekistan: Applying to Turkish Universities

If you are in Tashkent, Samarkand or Bukhara and planning a degree abroad, here is the short version. To study in Turkey from Uzbekistan you choose a programme, prepare and translate your documents, and apply directly to each university, often with no central exam. Then you accept an offer and arrange your student visa and residence permit. Turkey sits close to home, teaches thousands of programmes in Turkish and in English, and admits Uzbek students every year at bachelor's, master's and PhD level. This guide covers applying to Turkish universities from Uzbekistan step by step, from your school diploma to your first semester. For a wider overview you can also read our complete guide to studying in Turkey from Uzbekistan.

How Do You Study in Turkey from Uzbekistan?

To study in Turkey from Uzbekistan, you apply directly to each university, usually through an online portal, and most institutions assess international applicants on their high school diploma and grades rather than a single national exam. Because there is no central clearing system, you can and should apply to several universities at once. The core steps are the same whether you aim for a state or a private institution.

  1. Shortlist universities and programmes taught in a language you can study in.
  2. Check each university's entry requirements and application window on its official admissions page.
  3. Prepare your documents and get your diploma equivalence ready.
  4. Submit each application online and pay any application fee.
  5. Accept an offer, pay the registration deposit, and receive your acceptance letter.
  6. Apply for your student visa, travel to Turkey, and register for your residence permit.

Turkish university admission for Uzbek students is decentralised, so applying to four or five universities at once is normal and sensible. If you would rather not manage the paperwork alone, Turquoise Education can handle the whole file through our university admission service.

What Documents Do Uzbek Students Need to Apply?

Uzbek students applying to Turkish universities need a high school diploma, an academic transcript, a valid passport and proof of language ability, each translated into Turkish or English and notarised where the university asks. Gathering these early is the difference between a smooth application and a missed intake. Most universities ask for the same core set.

  • Your high school diploma (attestat) and its certified translation.
  • Your full academic transcript, showing your subjects and grades.
  • denklik (the diploma equivalence certificate issued by YOK, the Council of Higher Education), which confirms your Uzbek diploma matches a Turkish one.
  • A valid passport and a recent passport photograph.
  • Proof of English such as TOEFL or IELTS for English taught programmes, or a Turkish language certificate for Turkish taught ones.
  • Any entrance exam result the programme asks for, such as YOS or SAT.

Because Uzbekistan is party to the Hague Apostille Convention, your diploma and transcript can usually be legalised with an apostille rather than full consular legalisation, which saves time. In our experience advising applicants, the single most common cause of a delayed file is a transcript that was translated but never notarised, so deal with translation and notarisation early. You can confirm how diploma equivalence works on the official YOK website before you travel.

Do You Need the YOS Exam to Apply from Uzbekistan?

Many Turkish universities admit Uzbek students without the YOS exam (Yabanci Ogrenci Sinavi, the foreign student entrance exam), although some competitive programmes, especially in medicine and engineering, still ask for it or for the SAT. Whether you need it depends entirely on the universities on your shortlist. This is often the first thing families ask: how can Uzbek students study in Turkey without a difficult entrance exam? For many programmes the honest answer is that they can, on the strength of their diploma and grades.

If you want to avoid the test, our guide to applying for Turkish universities without YOS lists institutions that admit on grades alone. Where a programme does require YOS, the exam is administered by universities and by OSYM (the Student Selection and Placement Centre), and it tests mathematics and logical reasoning rather than a school syllabus.

State and Private Universities in Turkey

State (public) universities in Turkey usually charge far lower tuition than private (vakif) universities, while private universities often offer more English taught programmes and smaller classes. Both types award recognised degrees, so the right choice depends on your budget, your language plan and your field. The table below sums up the main differences.

FeatureState universitiesPrivate (vakif) universities
TuitionUsually much lowerUsually higher
LanguageMostly Turkish, some English tracksOften fully English taught
Class sizeLargerOften smaller
Entry basisMay weigh YOS or SATOften diploma and grades

Neither type is better in the abstract. A strong state university can offer excellent teaching at a low fee, while a private university may suit a student who needs an English taught programme and a faster application.

How Much Does It Cost to Study in Turkey from Uzbekistan?

The cost to study in Turkey from Uzbekistan has two parts: tuition, which at state universities is usually a small fraction of private university tuition, and living costs, which in most Turkish cities are lower than in Western Europe. As of the time this article is written, exact figures move with the exchange rate and the city, so treat any number you see as a range rather than a fixed price. Istanbul is the most expensive city for rent, while cities such as Konya, Kayseri or Bursa cost noticeably less.

Budget for tuition, rent, food, transport, health insurance and the residence permit fee. Rather than quote a figure for any named university, confirm the current tuition on that university's own admissions page, since fees change each academic year.

What Scholarships Can Uzbek Students Apply For?

Uzbek students can apply for Turkiye Burslari (Turkey Scholarships), the fully funded government scholarship run by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), as well as tuition discounts offered directly by many universities. Turkiye Burslari covers tuition, accommodation, a monthly stipend and travel, and it is competitive, so a strong application matters. It is open at bachelor's, master's and PhD level and usually includes a year of Turkish language study before the degree begins. Applying for a scholarship does not stop you applying to universities directly at the same time.

You apply through the official Turkiye Burslari portal, and our scholarships guide explains the main options and what a competitive file looks like.

How Do Uzbek Students Get a Turkish Student Visa and Residence Permit?

Once you hold an acceptance letter, you apply for a Turkish student visa at the Turkish consulate in Uzbekistan. After you arrive, you apply for a student residence permit through the Directorate General of Migration Management (Goc Idaresi). A Turkish student visa for Uzbek students is issued for the purpose of study, and it is the document that lets you enter Turkey to register at your university. You cannot rely on a tourist entry for study, so use the student visa from the start.

After you arrive, apply for the residence permit within the period the migration authority sets, using the e-ikamet system. We prepare the Turkish student visa file once your acceptance letter is in hand, and we support the residence permit application after you land.

A Realistic Timeline for Applying from Uzbekistan

A realistic timeline runs about six to nine months from your first shortlist to your first class. Start in the autumn or winter before the year you want to begin, so you have time for translation, equivalence and applications. Rushing the file is where mistakes happen.

Broadly, spend the early months researching universities and preparing documents, apply in the main spring and summer windows, accept an offer over the summer, and use the weeks before the semester for the visa and the residence permit. Deadlines differ by university, so always confirm each one on its official page.

Applying does take patience, but thousands of students study in Turkey from Uzbekistan every year, and the path from your attestat to a Turkish campus is well marked. Applying to Turkish universities from Uzbekistan rewards early and organised applicants, so start your shortlist now, keep your translated documents ready, and confirm each requirement at the source.
